Ptally vs hyperexponential (hx Renew)
How Ptally compares with hyperexponential's hx Renew pricing platform: who each suits, Python models versus readable JSON models, testing and approvals, AI features, the Guidewire acquisition and commercial model.
hyperexponential (hx) suits specialty, commercial and reinsurance carriers whose actuaries want to write bespoke pricing models in Python and run them inside an underwriting workflow. Ptally suits insurers and MGAs that want a rating engine for live quoting, with readable, tested models that underwriters can check without reading code, AI built into the workflow and no upfront cost. If your risks are complex, priced one at a time by underwriters, and your team wants to code its own models, look closely at hx. If you need a product live on an API, quoting at volume, with rate changes that are fast and controlled, look at Ptally.
What hyperexponential is
hyperexponential is a London-based software company. Its pricing platform, hx Renew, has been described by hx as a "Pricing Decision Intelligence" platform. Actuaries build models in Python on the platform, often by refactoring Excel raters, and underwriters use those models to price individual risks. In a 2023 case study, Aviva's Global Corporate and Specialty team built 20 pricing models in nine months to replace 20 separate Excel rating tools.
hx now positions itself more widely as "the agentic platform for commercial P&C insurance underwriting". Its site covers submission triage, risk assessment, renewals and portfolio monitoring, for reinsurance, US admitted, specialty and commercial lines, and MGAs. hx says its platform supports underwriting decisions on more than $75bn of annual commercial premium. Named customers include Aviva, Allianz, Beazley, Markel, HDI and Convex.
On AI, hx lists AI-assisted model development, an Actuarial Agent and an agent called hyperoperator that coordinates specialist agents for submission and monitoring work. hx says agents act only within set authorities, permissions and review points, with an audit trail of their actions. Partnerships include Akur8, Duck Creek and Guidewire.
On 27 October 2026 Guidewire signed a definitive agreement to acquire hyperexponential for $1.7bn in cash, plus up to $400m in contingent payments. Guidewire expects the deal to close by the end of January 2027. It has not said how hx products will be sold afterwards.
hx does not publish pricing.
What Ptally is
Ptally is an AI enabled insurance pricing platform for insurers and MGAs. A model is a readable JSON file of ordered steps: lookups, calculations, transforms, exclusions and referrals. Every change runs against the model's regression test suite and goes through draft, approval and publishing, with full version history. One engine serves a real-time API, embedded quote forms, and chat and voice agents. Ptally has served over 50 million quotes and handles aggregator volume. It covers any line of business in the UK, Europe and the US.

The key differences
The kind of risk being priced
hx grew up pricing specialty and London Market business, where an underwriter prices one complex risk at a time and a model often needs bespoke logic. That is where Python's freedom matters most, and where hx is strongest. Ptally is built for rules-based rating that runs on every quote: personal lines, SME, commercial packages and specialty products sold through an API, a broker portal or an aggregator.
Python code versus readable steps
A Python model can express almost anything, which suits actuaries who code. It also means changes are reviewed as code, and underwriters or auditors usually need someone technical to explain them. A Ptally model is plain configuration that anyone can read step by step. Each test is a full set of inputs and the expected result, the suite runs on every change, and the debug trace shows every input, lookup and formula for any quote. Endorsement steps can drive the policy documents built from each quote.
Who does the work
On hx, your actuaries typically build and maintain the models in Python. On Ptally your team can build models itself, through the dashboard or with an AI client. If you would rather not, Ptally's pricing experts can build the model from your documentation, with no implementation fee.
How AI is used
hx is moving towards agents that work across the underwriting process: reading submissions, chasing missing data and monitoring the book. Ptally uses AI to build and maintain the production model itself: extracting rate tables from documents, drafting steps and checking them against worked examples. Through the MCP server, Claude, ChatGPT or Cursor can read, validate, test and edit draft models. Agents cannot publish. People approve every release.
Cost and ownership
hx does not publish pricing, and the Guidewire deal adds a question worth asking any vendor: what changes to the contract, roadmap and integrations after a change of owner. Ptally is free to build. On the Performance plan you pay up to 1% of the gross written premium your models write. The Per model plan gives a flat annual fee per live model, and Enterprise adds a self-host option, SSO, audit and approvals, and custom SLAs.
